Blightwar is a great way to start a Stormcast Eternals army, packed with powerful units from the Vanguard Chambers. If you’ve got Blightwar and are looking for the next steps for your collection, or if you’re yet to order but are curious about how to build a Stormcast Eternals force, here’s our step-by-step guide to building up to a 2,000 point matched play army.
In the Blightwar box, you’ll get Neave Blacktalon, a unit of Aetherwings, a unit of Vanguard-Hunters, a unit of Vanguard-Palladors, and some Vanguard-Raptors. If you equip your Vanguard-Raptors with Longstrike Crossbows (perfect for sniping enemy Heroes!) and take these units in the Blacktalon’s Shadowhammers Warscroll Battalion, you’ll have 880 points of your army accounted for off the bat – a fast moving force with some powerful hero and monster killing capabilities.
From here, you’ll need two things – some Battleline choices and a hero or two to take advantage of your Artefacts of Power. The Lord-Aquilor is a natural choice; he’s a powerful unit in his own right, his Ride the Winds Aetheric ability has synergy with Neave Blacktalon, he turns your Vanguard-Hunters into Battleline units, and his Lord of the Azyrite Hurricane ability works well with the rest of the units in the army. This takes the list up to 1080 points.
After this, you’ll only need a couple of units to fill out your Battleline slots. A couple of units of fast moving Vanguard-Hunters should do the trick, bringing the list to 1360 points.
At this point, we’d also add a Knight-Azyros to a list – not only is this a great unit to carry your additional Artefact of Power, but the Illuminator of the Lost ability is a handy way to boost the power of your ranged attacks. He’s also great value for points – bringing you to 1440 points.
From here, there are a few different options, but we thought it’d be most fun to add the Celestant-Prime to the list – he’s mobile and hard hitting, and even got a points reduction in the latest General’s Handbook! Now we’re on 1780 points, with 220 left to spend.
We decided to take advantage of the enormous allies pool available to the Stormcast Eternals with our last choice – a unit of 5 Sisters of the Thorn. As well as being 220 points on the dot, these guys (well, girls) really help out the rest of the army, providing a much-needed source of magical support. Their unique spell, Shield of Thorns, is superb too – we’d recommend casting it on Neave Blacktalon to make her even deadlier against heroes and to provide her with a little extra durability.
This is just one option for building up the army, and can be tweaked to fit your own style, but however you build your list, the boxed set is a great starting point for a number of Stormcast Eternals armies. However you want to build your army, Blightwar is a great way to start it – order your copy today.
