It just came out so what EXACTLY is it?
This new book is mostly a collection of formations and data slates that exist in other supplements all brought into one place and updated to allow any marine player to use them (not just vanilla marines chapters).
After that it features updated chapter tactics rules and new chapter specific "Decurion" detachments, relics, warlord traits, tactical objectives for: Imperial/Crimson Fists, Iron Hands, Raven Guard, Salamanders, White Scars and Black Templars.
Also included are 4 new psychic disciplines exclusive to Space Marines.
Since i assume folks will find all the pertinent info they need on 1d4chan, i'll shift to my personal thoughts.
Most but not all of the content in this book exists elsewhere, so if you have the supplements you need you may feel a little typed. But since this brings several books worth of rules content, including some web exclusives (hah) it is a wonderfully convenient book to have!
Especially if you play a codex faction OTHER than Ultramarines.
All the Formation entrys are usable by all space marine chapters, not just the codex ones, so there is value for anyone who plays an astartes army. The Gladius and now Anvilus Strike Force Detachments can also be used by non-codex armies (DA, BA, GK, SW) but there will be some inconsistencies and honestly, those chapters individual codexes have some better options already included.
There are a number of formations and units that can be combed to make a brutal alpha strike list, especially if using Raven Guard.
Iron hands got their IWND back and all the goodies from Clan Raukaan.
Imperial Fists include updated rules from their own supplement as well.
White Scars include a collection of run and gun and bike centric formations to make an army that's almost Eldar mobile, and helps encourage players to make proper use of those lovely Rhinos.
SO my recommendation, if you use the Codex: Space Marines but don't play Ultramarines, this book is a must. And even if you don't this supplement will open up your options considerably. If you just want the psychic powers, just buy the cards for half the cost.
I'm an Iron Hands player, we have a new Imperial Fists player, an Ultramarine and several Blood Angels players, so our local meta can benefit from this.
The psychic powers are were the real strength is so expect to see more Librarius Conclaves. As for the army building parts, there's some more speed and assassination potential mostly. The formation to watch out for is the cheese wiz Skyhammer Assault Force. You might expect to see more of that…but most of our meta likes to keep things friendly soooo ya never know.
